Location
Aboyne Golf Club, Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
The Brief
Set in the stunning landscape of Royal Deeside, Aboyne Golf Club is a historic Scottish golf club with a busy clubhouse serving food and drinks to members and visitors year-round. Like many venues operating hospitality services, rising energy costs and the occasional grid outage were becoming increasingly important operational considerations.
The club came to us with four clear goals:
- Reduce long-term electricity costs
- Improve energy resilience during power cuts
- Lower the club’s environmental impact
- Do all of this without detracting from the natural beauty of the course and its surroundings
Ceiba Renewables was appointed to design and install a renewable energy solution that balanced performance, resilience, and aesthetics – no easy feat in one of Scotland’s most picturesque settings.
Our Approach
Our team designed a fully integrated system that delivers strong generation and backup resilience, while respecting the natural character of the club’s setting.
- Solar Generation: We installed a 32 kWp ground-mounted solar array using SunPower P7-450 modules. Ground mounting was the right choice here – it allowed us to orient the panels for maximum generation without touching the clubhouse architecture or disrupting the course itself. The array was installed with a deliberately low profile to minimise visual impact across the landscape.
- Battery Storage & Resilience: Alongside the solar array, we installed 54 kWh of battery storage using four Tesla Powerwall units, fully integrated with backup capability. For a hospitality venue, energy resilience isn’t just a convenience – it’s a business necessity. This configuration means that even if the grid goes down, the club can keep operating:
- Refrigeration stays on
- Food service can continue without interruption
- Payment systems remain fully functional

The Result
The project delivered results that went well beyond what the club initially expected – and one outcome in particular stood out.
Energy Awareness That Changed Behaviour: Once the committee gained real-time visibility of their energy consumption for the first time, something remarkable happened – they began actively managing how electricity was used across the clubhouse. The numbers speak for themselves:
- Before monitoring: 300 kWh per day
- After visibility: 150 kWh per day
That’s a 50% reduction in daily electricity consumption – achieved simply through awareness and better operational discipline, before even factoring in the solar generation and battery optimisation. It’s a powerful reminder that the technology is only part of the story.
- Long-Term Energy Savings: The solar installation now provides a significant portion of the club’s electricity requirements, helping shield the club from volatile energy prices and reducing dependence on grid supply.
- Energy Resilience: With battery backup in place, the club now has a meaningful safety net against grid outages. Key services in the clubhouse can continue running when they matter most – keeping members happy and operations running smoothly.
- Minimal Visual Impact: The low-profile ground-mounted system integrates discreetly into the landscape, preserving the natural character of the course. The beauty of Royal Deeside remains very much intact.
Conclusion
The Aboyne Golf Club project is a great example of how renewable energy can deliver financial, operational, and environmental benefits for community venues – and how the benefits often extend beyond what’s initially expected.
Key outcomes include:
- A 50% reduction in daily electricity consumption through energy visibility alone
- Lower operating costs thanks to on-site solar generation
- Increased resilience to grid outages, protecting clubhouse operations
- A more sustainable future for the club and the Royal Deeside landscape it calls home
Perhaps the most powerful insight from this project: energy visibility alone halved the club’s daily electricity consumption.
When combined with solar generation and battery storage, Aboyne Golf Club now operates with greater efficiency, resilience, and sustainability – ensuring it can continue serving members and visitors for years to come, while protecting the beautiful surroundings of Royal Deeside.
The Ceiba Renewables team delivered exactly what we needed—an energy solution that reduced our costs while fitting perfectly with our historic building. The process was smooth from start to finish, and the team’s attention to detail was exceptional.
